Chiew Wei hopes to justify her surprise inclusion

PETALING JAYA: It was a big surprise for Ooi Chiew Wei when the Triathlon Association of Malaysia (TRIAM) informed her that she will be taking part in the Korat SEA Games next week.

Chiew Wei will be competing in the triathlon Olympic discipline (40km cycling, 10km running and 1.5km swimming) together with women’s defending champion Kimbeley Yap.

Despite her surprise inclusion, she wants to put a creditable performance in Pattaya on Dec 9.
The SEA Games will be Chiew Wei’s major event after having just competed in six triathlons in the country since taking up the sport at the end of last year.

“I was only informed by TRIAM in the middle of last month. It was a big surprise to be included for the SEA Games,” said Chiew Wei who is a former national age-group swimmer.

The selection I believe was made based on the national rankings. I am third behind Stephanie (Chok) and Kimbeley. Since Stephanie is taking part in the duathlon, TRIAM decided to include me in the team for triathlon.”

Her best time so far was 2’33 set during the Port Dickson triathlon in July.

It has not been easy for the 22-year-old Chiew Wei as she has been juggling her studies and training since taking up triathlon.

“It’s been really tough. I have been trying to put in more time for training,” said Chiew Wei, a third year accounting student in UPM, Serdang.

Chiew Wei will be banking on her swimming skills in Pattaya.

“A lot will depend on how fast I can get out of the water. I would need to put in more effort in the cycling and running disciplines.”

Meanwhile, the eight-member national duathletes and triathletes received the latest hi-tech tri-suits worth RM850 each from PowerBar yesterday for the SEA Games.

Besides Kimbeley, Chiew Wei and Stephanie the others in the team are Razani Hussein and Heidilee Mohammad for triathlon; Wei Kuo Hau, Shahrom Abdullah and Mariana Mohammad for duathlon.
